About

Hi. My name’s Alex and I’m a Capricorn. I’m also a freelance writer & editor. Together with my family, friends and anyone else I can persuade to get involved, I run a smallholding in the West Country. This blog covers some of the highs and lows of this endeavour and may act as a cautionary tale for anyone else thinking about pursuing the rural dream.

First come a few chickens – ooh the joy of fresh-laid eggs! – then before you know it the lawn is a minefield of smelly hen poo. Pigs might be fun – ooh think of the home-made sausages and crispy crackling! then before you know it Sunday evening comes round and you’ve still got 25kg of mince to stuff into sausage skins. A few sheep look delightful in the field – perhaps I’ll take up spinning! – then before you know it you’re picking the maggots out of  their bum. Let’s try cows – look at those beautiful brown eyes and think of the steaks we’ll eat! – then before you know it you’re chasing them through a hedge as they attempt to depart the village.

Let’s not even start on the vegetable patch – but we are at least self-sufficient in slugs, dandelions and pigeons.

There’s never a dull moment, and we love it. I hope you enjoy reading about some of our adventures.
